PRODUCT MANAGER – Gift, Garden and Home Décor Wholesaler/Importer (concord / pleasant hill / martinez)

Regal Art & Gift (www.regalgift.com) is a leading wholesale distributor and importer in the Gift, Garden and Home décor industry. We are a 20 year old financially stable company currently expanding our Product Management Department due to rapid growth of the business. This is an exciting opportunity to travel to China 2-3 times a year to express your creative side in developing new products with our creative team, as well as your analytical side in working with the details of importing and manufacturing product overseas.

    Good communication skills, especially written, are critical to this job and knowledge of the Chinese language is a plus. Candidate must have working experience with importing product from overseas factories.

    JOB DESCRIPTION. This is a full-time salaried/exempt position. Regular office hours are Mon. Fri., 9:00 AM — 6:00 PM in our Martinez offices, additional hours during the week may be required as the demands of the job dictate. Overseas travel required for a period of 2-3 weeks, two to three time per year. Primary responsibility will be for all products imported from China. Responsibilities include:

    PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT CYCLE (twice per year)
    o Travel overseas with Creative Director 2-3 times a year finalizing products, packaging and prices. Inspect factories and production to ensure they are meeting guidelines in Vendor Guide.
    o Negotiate prices; determine packaging specs to meet company standards, inner/master carton quantities, CBM, duty etc. to obtain landed costs and required margins.
    o Give input to Creative team for special hangtags, labeling and/or packaging.
    o Make sure all products are properly tested and labeled to meet USA standards/requirements.
    o Sign off on pre-production samples and packaging, ensure samples arrive in time for line reviews.
    o Review sales analysis and profitability on all products from China.
    o Present recommended assortment strategy, new product opportunities, life cycle analysis on what to discontinue and for the Creative team and the line reviews.
    o Prepare, analyze and present customer and sales rep. surveys summary for each catalog.
    o Research, prepare and present competitor review reports.
    o Work with Creative Director and Design Team to develop and implement new product strategies.

    VENDOR MANAGEMENT
    o Communicate regularly with China agent and vendors via e-mail and telephone regarding all order issues, payments, quality control, packaging, delivery and container booking.
    o Implement company vendor guide requirements with factories, update guide as necessary and communicate changes to factories.
    o Grow or retire China factories based on their performance tracked in the Vendor Evaluation form. Diversify vendor base as needed and maintain appropriate back up factories for key products.
    o Sourcing new factories as needed with the China agent and visit new factories for approval.
    o Maintain all factory profiles and agreements.

    QUALITY CONTROL
    o Develop and write QC standards for each factory for the products they produce.
    o Review Inspection Reports from factories prior to every shipment to assure QC Standards and packaging standards are being met, and regularly correspond with factories about them.
    o Inspect product from each container received in the warehouse and then prepare detailed QC reports with photos for factories to make any necessary improvements.
    o Prepare any chargeback claims to factories and negotiate payment.
    o Monthly review of customer claims and develop corrective measures for factories.
    o Maintaining approved samples for QC checking.

    INVENTORY MANAGEMENT
    o Review weekly, monthly sales reports for product trends, stock levels, top selling items, plan vs. forecast and revise vendor forecasts and orders as necessary with the Inventory Planner (IP).
    o Review overstocks, out of stocks and slow moving inventory to proactively determine solutions.
    o Decide on periodic sales promotions to move slow moving inventory with IP.

    PURCHASING/IMPORTING
    o Review and approve all POs with IP for China suppliers and send to factories. Track and maintain order and reorder schedule and keep internal reports updated.
    o Develop proactive solutions to get product on time in event of shipping delays.
    o Approve and finalize all Sales Confirmations from factories.
    o Keep orders, internal manufacturer’s cost and specification sheet and data base up-to-date as suppliers make approved changes to pricing, packing, or product.
    o Proof by e-mail all labels, packaging and carton markings from factories.
    o Maintain all item numbers, bar codes, specifications, assortments, and parts in data base.

    KEY ACCOUNT SUPPORT
    o Obtain pricing, packaging and other information from factories for the Sales Manager.
    o Set up special item nos. as required and maintain all special specifications.
    o Send orders to factories on custom products with special labeling, specifications, packaging etc.

    MARKETING/CATALOG/TRADESHOWS
    o Attend domestic (twice a year) & international tradeshows (once a year) to review market trends, pricing and source new products/factories.
    o Coordinate development of all show samples, track and ensure they arrive on time.
    o Develop Line lists for catalog development
    o Develop assortments, prepacks and parts needed.
    o Proof catalog prior to printing.
    o Contribute to writing copy as required by Creative team.

    PROCEDURE MANUAL
    o Document all procedures as they pertain to the position.

    QUALIFICATIONS
    • 5+ years product management / development experience working with overseas factories, preferably in China in the gift, garden and/or home décor industries.
    • Ability to travel overseas for extended periods of up to 2-3 weeks at a time, 2-3 times a year.
    • Strong negotiation skills.
    • Detail oriented with strong sense of accuracy.
    • Astute proficiency to analyze sales reports.
    • Understand the importers supply chain.
    • Outstanding organizational and multi-tasking skills.
    • MS Office computer literacy especially advanced MS Excel skills (creating spreadsheets containing advanced formulas, conditional formatting, links).
    • Degree in Business, Marketing or related field preferred.
    • Fluent in Mandarin language a plus.
