Senior Linux Operations Engineer at BitPusher (financial district)

  • BitPusher is a small, rapidly growing web infrastructure management company based in San Francisco. We are seeking a creative, dynamic and highly responsible senior operations engineer.

BitPusher manages web servers, networks and other IT infrastructure, both owned by BitPusher and hosted elsewhere. We build long-term relationships with our customers and take the time to understand their applications, their technical needs and their business needs. We customize things as required to meet those needs, but we also keep things as standard as we can for reasons that we’re sure you already understand.

Do you like making order out of chaos? Are you effective when managing lots of little projects, but also have a tendency to make improvements that you didn’t originally have in mind? Are you always looking for ways to manage servers more efficiently? If so, let’s talk.

    What you’ll do at BitPusher:
    – Be a hands-on engineer for our customers’ production web infrastructure, working on both ongoing management and implementation and migration projects
    – Be the in-house domain expert on a few key open source web technologies (we’re flexible about exactly which ones, but Ruby and Python web application stacks and a couple of NoSQL databases would be ideal)
    – Be a hands-on engineer for BitPusher’s infrastructure, including networking, imaging and provisioning environment, and administrative/operations automation tools
    – Play an active role in coming up with better ways to administer large numbers of systems supporting diverse applications, by improving both technical practices and processes
    – Help take our application hosting techniques to the next level, both through incremental improvements and new platform design
    – Participate in our on-call rotation

    Requirements and Qualifications:
    – Eight years of production systems administration/engineering experience in a Linux/UNIX environment, including at least four years in web operations
    – Strong understanding of technologies such as load balancing and caching
    – Experience with performance analysis and tuning for web-based applications (Apache, Nginx, Ruby, Tomcat, etc…)
    – Expert-level knowledge of monitoring systems and configuration management systems (Puppet, Chef, Nagios, Munin, etc.)
    – Experience with virtualization using commodity hardware
    – Strong scripting ability in Bash, Ruby, Perl and/or Python
    – Ability to successfully work with multiple remote customers
    – Strong personal and professional initiative with a focus on the success of the team and organization

We look forward to receiving your resume.
